Learning to Run a Business with Dr. Scott Rocklage

Dr. Scott Rocklage has not only thrived in his career but also grew his desire and status in business. Being one of the Nobel-recognized scientists, his expertise in leadership has enabled him perform well in the business sector as well.

According to him, the best away for entrepreneurs to get high returns on their investments is by accurately measuring their risks. He states that this yardstick differentiates between those who increase their profit margin with those that loss their investment. Dr. Scott Rocklage also advises that it is important to stay true to your passion and strengths in business. He points out that this can be quite challenging considering the ever-changing trends in the business world today. In his experience, there are times when one investment seemed fit to his passion, but in reality, it did not really fit with his strategy. He had to let it go.

He relates to his failures in business when he first took up the aspect of leadership. Dr. Rocklage insists that when hiring, it is extremely important to hire the right person for the job. He states that a person’s performance characteristics matter more than what they’ve achieved in past or whatever it is their performance reviews say.

After joining 5AM Ventures, he learned that having a system in place working efficiently for a company is much more important than hiring someone with a good background. Without systems, there would be no way for this new person to understand what the firm aims at in terms of goals and objectives. One of the major exceptions about Dr. Rocklage is that he joined 5AM Ventures in 2003 and rose to managing partner just after a year’s work with the company.

Besides his business-oriented side, he is also an expert in the healthcare industry. Dr. Rocklage has chaired different company boards, such as Kinestral, Rennovia, Pulmatrix, Epirus and Cidara. He has also been the chief executive officer and president of Cubist Pharmaceuticals and Salutar Nycomed respectively. Having been in leadership positions for research departments, Dr. Rocklage oversaw many clinical trials. His experience also got significant drug applications approved by the FDA, including Teslascan, Omniscan and Cubicin.

Dr. Rocklage has published more than 100 journal articles and overseen 30 FDA approvals in his career as an expert in chemistry. He got his doctorate chemistry degree from the Massachusetts University of Technology. He is also 2004’s chemistry Noble Prize winner.
